China Grill Moving from South Beach to Brickell

As if the dining selection couldn't get any hotter in Downtown Miami! News of China Grill opening up this year on Brickell is over the top...

The new 15,000-square-foot China Grill at 801 Brickell Ave. will be a three-level restaurant with elevated ceilings and a covered outdoor dining garden and bar. Designed by New York's ICRAVE Studio in association with Miami based Arquitectonica, the new Brickell restaurant is part of an effort to refresh the brand which this year will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its flagship New York opening.

China Grill has locations in Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, New York, and Mexico City, all of which are expected to receive renovations and a new culinary concept.
In 1987 China Grill New York opened to a packed dining room and immediate critical acclaim. By its fifth anniversary, the restaurant was as busy as ever and regarded as one of the hottest destination spots in New York City.

Jeffrey Chodorow’s labor of love, his first and only venture into the restaurant world, had proven to be an enduring success in a scene where restaurants seemed to come and go overnight. But something was missing…he wanted mashed potatoes.

Never satisfied with the perception that China Grill was a "Chinese" restaurant, Jeffrey broadened the horizons to include even less likely pairings. "Why not wasabi mashed potatoes? Lobster mashed potatoes? What about lobster pancakes or a peking duck salad?" Chodorow’s insistence on thinking outside the wok would set the pitch for what would become one of the most innovative and highest-grossing multi-concept restaurant companies in the world.

Over twenty years and twenty locations later, China Grill Management and its affiliates continue to produce some of the most original, critically acclaimed and wildly popular dining hotspots in major cities across the globe. Our restaurants have been featured in such diverse publications as The New York Times, In Style, Bon Appetit, The LA Times, 944, and The Miami Herald (to name just a few) and have won awards ranging from Zagat NYC’s "most popular nightspot" to Esquire Magazine’s "Best New Restaurant."

Why?   Because we redefine the very meaning of "restaurant." The philosophy operating behind every CGM property is as simple as it is daring—that serious food and dazzling spectacle are not mutually exclusive.

By pairing the culinary ingenuity of world-class chefs, atmospheres crafted by internationally renowned designers and the highest standards of service, CGM’s mission is to create an unrivaled and unforgettable dining experience for every single customer. It is this combination of uncompromising vision and gourmet expertise that has earned China Grill Management a phenomenal reputation as a trendsetter at the vanguard of dining.

Town Kitchen & Bar

Courtesy of Town Kitchen & Bar, South Miami

Serving Global Comfort Foods with updated steakhouse appeal. Entree salads, hot sandwiches, homemade soups, fresh baked breads, and brick oven pizzas are just some of our features. Our "triple grind" burger and parmesan-truffle fries are a must!

What the Miami New Times Says:  it's ideal for an early afternoon drink-up on the weekend. By early evening it's a classy, trendy, minimalist restaurant that specializes in "global comfort food" like brick oven pizzas and yummy parmesan-truffle fries. By night it's bumpin', with crowds of trendy 20- and 30-somethings, clutching martini glasses as they spill out into the street. The food is delicious — just try the grilled Caribbean jerk churrasco steak salad, it's $15 and to die for — but we keep going back for the cocktails. Town's got a classy clientele and a wide variety of actually delicious martinis, and a big beer menu that includes Chimay and other exotic ales. Try the Towntini — a swirl of Absolut Mandarin Vodka, Cointreau, pineapple juice, cranberry juice, and a mandarin orange garnish for $10. You'll feel like you've been transported to an elegant hotel on Collins Avenue, even though the glowing sign of Sunset Place hangs in the near distance.

Elizabeth Stewart @ Miami.com comments.  While Town Kitchen & Bar has been known for its popular, and tasty, American cuisine – especially its weekend brunches - the South Miami spot has more than just eggs over easy to entice a weekly visit. Tucked in a quiet corner behind Sunset Place, the casual crowd pleaser offers a lively, and cost effective (for the ladies, anyway) Thursday night scene.

Some happy hours make you run out the door before your computer shuts down, but Town’s Thursday night specials have zero time limit. Ladies receive half off everything on the menu all night. Choices are endless, including an extensive list of signature cocktails and martinis, wines, and beer. And for those ladies feeling particularly ambitious, arrive between 4-7 p.m. for complimentary champagne.

The crowd and the music are largely determined by whether you decide to drink inside, or al fresco. Inside offers more of a nightlife vibe, pumping a Top 40 selection including anything from Shakira to Ricky Martin (hey, it is South Miami afterall). With plenty of high-and-low-top tables available in the trendy but intimate space, the primarily 30s-plus crowd tends to swarm around the bar. The average Town goer may still even be in their scrubs or loosening his necktie at the end of a long workday. Another perk of sitting near the bar (besides the obvious drink proximity) is this is the only place where all appetizers are also half off.

Outside is equipped with additional couches and tables, and is more for the laid back customer or perhaps a family or two there for dinner. Although you can still hear a faded Ricky Martin song playing in the background, this is the area to sit if you are there for less head bobbing, and more hob-knobbing. And while appetizers out here are full price, waiters keep the half-priced drinks flowing.

Segafredo Brickell and Spazio Nero

The Area’s First Destination to Combine Café, Epicurean and Nightlife Concepts Opens

Segafredo Zanetti Espresso Café, loved around the world for its multi-sensory experience reflecting the lifestyle of the Italian café, opens its newest location at 1421 South Miami Avenue in the downtown Miami / Brickell area. Timed with the burgeoning growth of the Brickell area as well as the beginning of a New Year, Segafredo Brickell takes Italian café culture to a whole new level, featuring an indoor and outdoor seating area and a on-premise boutique nightclub, Spazio Nero (Italian for Black Space).

Segafredo Brickell exudes a posh and luxurious atmosphere while at the same time offering guests the warmth and charm of Italian hospitality. As soon as guests arrive, they are enveloped in the chic yet comfy vibe of Segafredo Brickell’s grounds which feature eclectic antique furniture in the outdoor living room lounge areas.

The elaborate red and white floral design matches Segafredo Zanetti Espresso Café’s signature colors. Inside the venue, exhibiting the same level of chic-meets-comfort as the exterior, guests will experience a true Italian-style café with a coffee bar with barstools, plush red leather couches and free Internet services. The Segafredo Brickell menu identity is based on its Italian heritage and, in addition to favorite espresso drinks and pastries, will offer a large selection of Italian-style food and café, music and signature cocktails.

Located within the restaurant, Spazio Nero is a lavish boutique night club that will be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Embodying the nightclub’s name, the décor is outfitted in all things black, from the stylish black leather couches with silver buttons, to the black-tinted mirrors throughout, to the fleur-de-lis textured black-on-black wallpaper. The club features an elevated DJ booth, a one-of-a-kind advanced multi-zoned distribution audio system and a computer controlled lighting program by Infinite Audio Systems.

“Both Segafredo and Spazio Nero alike bring a new lifestyle to Brickell that has been missing until now,” said Segafredo Brickell co-owner Alejandro Ferllen. “We are a stylish café and lounge that’s high-energy and, yet comfortable enough for our guests to enjoy the surroundings; relax amongst friends and have a cup of coffee or a cocktail in a stress-free environment.”

The Brickell area is home to Miami’s most prominent financial entities, luxury high-rise condos and a fast-growing retail corridor – the perfect environment for the establishment’s trendsetting day-to-night concept. Segafredo Brickell offers a place to confer with clients over a cup of coffee, head to lunch breaks with co-workers, or relax and unwind with a cocktail for happy hour and then enjoy your night away at Spazio Nero. •Service can be lackluster

Description

•Large menu
•Less expensive than other places on Ocean Drive
•Great place to people-watch

Guide Review - News Cafe

If you want a laid-back, yet trendy spot on South Beach, the News Café is the place. Opened in 1988, the owner (who has since opened several other successful restaurants around Miami) started with a few tables, a couple of bookshelves and a newspaper kiosk. Today, the restaurant boasts a sprawling sidewalk café and an interesting newsstand/gift shop. Check out the shop’s wide selection of beautiful, Miami-themed coffee-table books.

The restaurant is located at 800 Ocean Drive, at the corner of Ocean and 8th Street. On-street parking is nearly nonexistent, but there are several nearby parking garages that are reasonably priced – but may fill up on weekends or during special events. This is one reason why the restaurant does not earn a full five stars; on some busy weekends, it’s nearby impossible to park – and then the wait for a table at the News Café can be long.

While the News Café is a perfect place for a burger and fries, many enjoy the round-the-clock breakfast. Eggs Florentine, buttermilk pancakes and smoked salmon on a bagel are welcome noshes after dancing all night at the clubs. Or, if you’re not in the breakfast mode, don’t miss out on the Middle Eastern Combo, a platter with hummous, tabouli salad and grape leaves. You can’t go wrong with whatever you order on the extensive menu – and you will love watching the international (and often beautiful) crowds pass by on their way to and from the beach, which is right across the street!
